Normal Bob Smith

I haven't posted much on this blog yet, other than the occasional set list and a handful of poorly written album reviews. Like most people with a blog, (and who doesn't have one these days?) I lack the motivation to keep up with it. This being said, I hope to emphasize the coolness of this website I'm about to rave about by actually posting something about it.

Normal Bob Smith is perhaps best known for his creation http://www.jesusdressup.com/ . Where you are invited to dress Jesus up in various outfits (there's a whole hilarious series of them).
According to what I've gleaned from a thoroughly enjoyable three day browse-fest of his main site, http://www.normalbobsmith.com/ this main site was initially created basically to deal with the enormous outpouring of hate mail Bob receives on a regular basis, for his sacrilegious humor including the Jesus Dress Up series, (which are available as refrigerator magnets :)

Usually this hate mail, well I suppose exclusively (speaking for only those I've so far read, and that's alot) are of course written by ignorant silly people who as I once heard Tina Fey say, "...think Adam & Eve rode dinosaurs to church". Since it's conception as a place to wittily deal with heaping mountains of hate mail, http://www.normalbobsmith.com/ has become much more. Though the hate mail section is apparently what keeps many folks returning to the site time and time again. Other notable points of interest include comics, movie reviews (you just have to see the review of Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ".) http://www.normalbobsmith.com/worstmovies/worstmovies_passion.html ; interesting (and amazingly on point) descriptions of various subcultures, games, and all sorts of other cool things.

Normal Bob Smith is a thoughtful, witty fellow with an almost superhuman knack of dealing intelligently with the unintelligent masses. For this Bob I applaud you!

The first All Smiles album "Ten Readings of a Warning" was one of my favorites if not my absolute favorite record of 2008. The new one "Oh For The Getting and Not Letting Go" is scheduled for release on the 30th. Most of it however, (if not all) in full track format (not lame 30 second previews) is available on their last.fm artist page. Click here for a listen.
"Oh For The Getting and Not Letting Go" is really another must have. I'm on my third listen at the moment. As with "Ten Readings of a Warning" I find myself hard pressed to pick a favorite few tracks. The whole thing is beautiful.
This new release finds Fairchild and crew a bit more confident in tone. The compositions have a heavier, somewhat edgier feel than did the first album. Happily, none of the dreamy yet cohesive compositional components that worked so well on "Ten Readings of a Warning" have fallen by the wayside or been diluted in the least. An excellent album.

Last night I was asked to fill in for a DJ who never showed up for his shift at a club I had never been to. It was an old friend in SL who did the asking so I accepted. Placebo: Battle for the Sun

I've always found Placebo albums pretty hit or miss. I'm not however, a harsh critic of albums in their entirety... anymore. Now more than ever I tend to view each track as a separate piece and rate it accordingly. I don't claim that this is the best way to listen to music. Time constraints though, often make it necessary to keep coming back to an album (if it's worthy of another listen) instead of the more leisurely album digestions of past years.
If you've ever done any DJing you'll know what I mean when I say you find yourself quickly (maybe too quickly in many cases) determining which tracks have the most initial impact on yourself and presumably others. Then quickly moving on to the next new release. Most sets I've played are two hours. That's approximately 32 songs from 32 different artists, every time. That's a lot of pressure to keep it fresh. It's not just DJs' who are absorbing music that way these days either... most people are, and the reasons for this are many. Purchasing trends dictate production by and large. Nobody's buying full albums anymore. Gone (maybe) are the days of the 'concept album' etc. Suffice it to say that 'Battle for the Sun' (Placebo's 6th) is on first listen, a listenable album.
